It’s another season of Championship football for West Brom, and the club’s supporters probably saw it coming.
After a poor run of form towards the end of the campaign, it was bound to be the case that the Baggies would struggle in the play-offs – and they did.
Now they must once again slug their way through 46 league games in the hope of returning to the Premier League.
As the second top goalscorers in the league, finding the back of the net was met with relative ease — though keeping goals out at the other end wasn’t so convincingly done.
West Brom conceded the most goals out of the top nine teams in the division, a sign of the major work that needs to be done in defence.
And if given the chance, Dara O’Shea, who’s been exceptional on loan at Exeter City, could be the man to bring about the necessary change that is needed at the back.
O’Shea made 33 appearances for the League Two side and was given rave reviews by manager Matt Taylor, with the 37-year-old saying he could “go all the way”.
That statement alone should make West Brom think twice before splashing out on a new defender, knowing they potentially already have a brilliant one within their ranks.
As a no-nonsense centre-half and more old-fashioned type defender, West Brom could really do with the 20-year-old. With him in the side, they could become a much harder outfit to break down.
O’Shea can also be used in midfield. That and the above should really convince West Brom to at least give the Exeter loanee a chance to shine during pre-season.
