West Bromwich Albion beat fellow promotion rivals Queens Park Rangers 2-0 with one player, in particular, flying under the radar.
Nathan Ferguson and Matheus Pereira proved to be the match-winners and the standout figures during the encounter.
Ferguson opened the scoring in the 53rd minute with a strike from range after the R’s defence back off the full-back. Pereira made in two in the 84th minute from a free kick which saw Yohan Barbet get sent off (via BBC).
The 18-year-old scored his first ever goal for the club, as he completed the most passes, had the most touches of any player on the pitch and won the second-most clearances of any player on the pitch (via WhoScored).
Meanwhile, Pereira had the third-most touches and played the fifth-most passes of any player on the pitch. The Brazilian also contributed defensively, attempting the third-most tackles of any player on the pitch.
However, it was the £3.15m-rated Kyle Bartley, who seemed to go unnoticed with his performance at centre-back. The 28-year-old made the most clearances and won the most aerial duels and the third-most blocks on his way to a superb performance for the Baggies.
Express and Star seemed to agree with the assessment of Bartley as they gave him an eight out of 10, alluding to his ‘exceptional performance’.
They said: “Bartley put in an exceptional performance at the heart of the defence. Commanding both on the deck and in the air, Jordan Hugill was in his pocket from the first whistle to the last. Will now be full of confidence for his return to Leeds.” (Source: Express and Star)
If these performances continue, Bartley could prove key in the club’s bid to return to the Premier League.
