Plenty of West Brom fans were rejoicing after a statement from the EFL offered a significant boost to their hopes of promotion to the Premier League.
As noted on the club’s official website wba.co.uk and shared on Twitter via @WBA, the EFL released a statement on Thursday which declared that their preference is to finish the Championship season on the pitch. However, if that option becomes no longer viable, the final league standings will be determined on an unweighted points-per-game (PPG) basis while promotion and relegation will be retained.

As things stands, Slaven Bilic’s Baggies are on course to return to the Premier League as they occupy the second automatic promotion place in the Championship. With every team in the division having played 37 matches, the current table would be unaffected if a PPG model is adopted, therefore sending Albion up if the season cannot be completed. As it is, they have a very strong chance of finishing the job themselves as they hold a six-point lead over third-placed Fulham. [via TransferMarkt]
