West Brom: It’s time for Jefferson Montero to prove he’s worth it

West Brom: It’s time for Jefferson Montero to prove he’s worth it - West Brom

At one point during West Brom’s first play-off semi-final leg against Aston Villa, everything seemed fine.

Indeed, the Baggies were withholding pressure and boasting a narrow lead pretty well. However, in a matter of moments, their joy turned into sorrow really quickly.

The frustrations obviously took a toll on star striker Dwight Gayle, who ended up lunging on Jed Steer, getting himself sent off in the process. Terrible, terrible stuff. Well, while West Brom might have a puncher’s chance, winning on Tuesday night got so much more difficult at that very moment. Frankly, without Gayle’s foxy instincts or lethal finishing ability in the final third, problems will arise in attack.

However, one thing they do boast is a pretty stacked squad. Gayle could be out of contention, but there are plenty of figures who can cover up for him. Jefferson Montero, signed on loan from Swansea City in January, is yet to make his mark at the Hawthorns.

Now is the chance for him to become a West Brom hero. Who cares if he’s been quiet before? Play a blinder tomorrow night and he’d have been worth the wages.

The 29-year-old has all the ability in the world, but struggles to utilize it properly. His tricky feet can bamboozle defenders at will, while his searing pace along with dribbling ability can definitely destabilize the Villans. If he doesn’t mess up in the final third, he’s an absolute nightmare to defender against. Still, so far, Montero’s only scored that one goal at QPR for the Baggies.

He needs to increase that on Tuesday. He can increase that on Tuesday, right?

Montero has the eye for the spectacular and has all the tools to be a threat in a one-off game. Shan needs to give the best example of his man-management skills by motivating the Ecuadorian to do something special and inspire his side into marching towards the play-off final.

West Brom fans, do you think Shan’s and co can turn it around on Tuesday? Join the discussion by commenting below…
