Caution should be the name of the game for West Bromwich Albion heading into the next few weeks.
At this point, gaining automatic promotion is nearly impossible and the best chance the Baggies have is earning a ticket to the Premier League through the play-offs.
However, to have the best chance of doing so, they need everyone fully fit for the cause. The play-offs are bound to be a grind and Jimmy Shan needs each and every player putting their best in to get them to dreamland. Right now, things don’t look so good in terms of fitness in the squad.
Ahmed Hegazi recently picked up a knock in their win over Hull City, while Stefan Johansen’s not fully fit right now. Matt Phillips is also slowly getting phased into the team and Shan is showing impressive preservation skills in keeping his biggest assets protected from exhaustion.
Even in Jake Livermore’s case, Shan opted not to play him against Reading to keep him fresh. In this crucial phase, he needs to continue his good work with rotating, making the best use of his squad players and just grinding through games. Only in the play-offs should he unleash his side’s full potential.
To survive in the Championship, rotation is key. Jimmy Shan has noticed the ill-effect the rigorous Championship schedule brings. He’ll need to keep rotating his key players over the next few weeks to make sure they’re in the best shapes come the playoffs and can cause havoc when it matters.
