Charlie Austin has lavished praise on West Bromwich Albion teammate Matt Phillips for his performances this season.
The forward lauded his fellow attacker for ‘offering so much’, however, Austin alluded to how the Scotland international also goes under the radar (via Express and Star).
Phillips has enjoyed a brilliant start to the season with the Baggies, who sit top of the Championship table after 11 games.
The Scotsman is the club’s joint-top scorer in the second flight of English football, having notched up four goals (via WhoScored). His four goals are already one less than what he managed in the entirety of last season, where Phillips scored five (via TransferMarkt).
Manager Slaven Bilic put the player’s goalscoring feat down to being in the box more.
He said: “He always had that in him, but wingers have to be in and around the box. He likes to be around the box, but I said to him sometimes he wasn’t in the box enough.”
“We’ve seen this season that, most of the time, when the ball comes in from the other side, he’s inside the box. That’s where the goals have been scored from.”
Diving deeper into the statistics, you begin to see how Phillips is a crucial player for Slaven Bilic’s side. In the Championship, he averages the second-most shots per game of the entire West Brom side. His efforts have been rewarded with the 26-year-old sitting as the club’s joint-top scorer, as mentioned above.
However, Phillips also provides the side with a creative spark, playing the third-most key passes per game of any West Brom player.
Phillips is proving a useful asset for Slaven Bilic this season with his goals in the Championship. His impact is plentiful, and he can assist the club in trying to achieve their target of promotion back to the Premier League.
