He’s struggled with injuries but when he has played, he has impressed, hasn’t he? Achraf Lazaar joined Sheffield Wednesday in January on a short-term loan from Newcastle United to provide cover in the left-back role for the second half of the season.
Lazaar has struggled for consistent game time wherever he has been in recent years whether that be through injuries, performances or suspensions. Since moving to Newcastle United in 2016, he has been unable to stable down a starting place at St. James’ Park with this spell at Wednesday being his second loan spell since his move to the Magpies.
He did begin this season in Newcastle, but having not made a first-team appearance all season, a loan to the Owls seemed a positive move for Lazaar. Given Matt Penney’s injury, cover at left-back was certainly necessary.
The 27-year-old made just four appearances for Wednesday due to his tough time with injuries but when he did play, particularly on his debut in the 3-1 win over Swansea, he was fantastic as he gave his all in attack and defence.
With his loan expiring at the end of the season, though, that poses the question as to what is next for Lazaar?
A possible outcome is that Bruce’s sees his current options in Penney and Morgan Fox as more than suitable and does not choose to return for Lazaar’s services.
Another outcome is that on the basis of his performances when he was not injured, Lazaar is brought back to Hillsborough to contend for the left-back role, with Fox potentially even moving on. In our view, that’s the best outcome possible, a second chance for the Moroccan.
It may be risky, given Lazaar’s injury record, but it is a risk that could pay off and given his displays when he was fit, Bruce should look to extend the deal.
