He’s had quite the introduction to life at Sheffield Wednesday, hasn’t he? Indeed, few would have predicted Cameron Dawson to have the involvement he has had this season and with so many factors yet to be decided ahead of the forthcoming season, he must fancy his chances between the sticks.
Dawson had gradually built up his experience in the lead up to this campaign having been loaned out to Plymouth Argyle, Alfreton Town, Wycombe Wanderers and Chesterfield in recent years, as well as having more than a handful of opportunities at Wednesday in the previous two seasons.
Jos Luhukay began his first full season with the Owls opting for Dawson between the sticks as he started every Championship game under Wednesday’s former boss until his departure. It was particularly strange, given the quality of Keiren Westwood, that the Irishman did not feature in a matchday squad under Luhukay but he was soon reinstated as the number one once Luhukay had left Hillsborough.
Dawson has since played four times in the league, appearing in the last three games due to Westwood’s injury, but as the latter is yet to extend his Wednesday contract with talks set to be held last week, as per The Star, that poses the question as to what the future holds for Dawson?
If Westwood’s contract talks are a success and the 34-year-old pens a new deal in South Yorkshire, then Dawson may look for a loan, preferably for both parties in the Championship where he can continue to develop and gain regular first-team experience at a vital stage in his career, now being 23. Potentially, that would leave the door open in the future for him to return when Westwood does leave.
If Westwood does move on in the summer, though, Dawson should be turned to. Granted, the boyhood Wednesday fan has been inconsistent as he has already been Man of the Match in a Steel City derby, yet also struggled at times at the weekend against Preston North End. However, at his age, that should be expected as he is still a way off being the finished article and has the potential to better his game as his quality has been seen at times this season – that will only come with faith from a manager and regular game time.
