It’s been a spell of mixed success for Liam Bridcutt at Nottingham Forest, hasn’t it? Indeed, in the years to come, when both parties have moved their separate ways, his spell at the City Ground could be viewed as one that was underwhelming on the whole for what he could have offered Forest.
Having moved across the Championship from Leeds United to Forest in August 2017, Bridcutt started life at Forest under Mark Warburton well. He was a regular anchoring the midfield before a spell on the sidelines.
Obviously, the former Scotland international lost his place in the starting side under Aitor Karanka for a few months but managed to regain it just prior to the end of the season. Fairly impressive stuff that should have led to rebirth but, as this so often happens, it failed to materialise.
This season, though, has been ever so different for Bridcutt, having made just three starts in the EFL Cup and a substitute appearance early in the Championship season. Since Martin O’Neill took over the reins at Forest in January, Bridcutt has not featured in a matchday squad since.
The 30-year-old has ever been used by the under-23 side so it is evident that Bridcutt surely is not in O’Neill’s thinking, despite his qualities still being rated by a chunk of the fanbase.
So, with a year on his contract (per Transfermarkt), that poses the question as to what the future holds for Bridcutt?
As he is yet to be used by O’Neill, it is near-impossible to see Bridcutt become part of them over the course of the summer.
The most likely scenario is that Bridcutt gets moved on from Forest to a potential suitor that could provide him with more consistent game time. It is clear he still has a lot to offer another Championship or even a League One side if there were no proposals from the second tier of English football. A fresh start seems the wisest move for his career.
