He’s been served the Blades fantastically, hasn’t he? Not many of the Bramall Lane faithful would have expected Martin Cranie to have the impact he has had, since extending his deal in January but oh wow.
Cranie was brought to Sheffield United over the summer on a short-term deal as a free agent, having been released by Middlesbrough in the summer after managing just 146 minutes of Championship football in the second half of last season.
For the first few months at United, Cranie struggled to break up the back three partnership and unsurprisingly so, given their form this season. He made just the one appearance in the Championship before the turn of the year.
His deal was then extended until the end of the season so he could provide experience and know-how at the back, given that he was part of the Huddersfield Town side that gained promotion in the 2016/17 season.
Since the new deal, Cranie has gone onto make 13 League appearances, whether that be from the start or of the bench, and has certainly played his part in the promotion-winning campaign.
With Cranie’s contract expiring this summer, though, that poses the question as to what is next for the 32-year-old?
Well, given that he has provided suitable depth at the back and has been a positive influence for the Blades, he should be rewarded with a new deal.
He may not feature too heavily in the Premier League, but Chris Wilder’s tactics get the best out of him and he is clearly respected by both the fans and his teammates, so it makes sense f0r Cranie to remain at the Lane. It’ll be all hands on deck for the Blades in the top tier, after all.
Blades, what do you think the future holds for Cranie? What do you hope it does? Join the discussion by commenting below…
