Charlton Athletic Record Transfers

Charlton Athletic are not a big money spending football club by any means, and their highest transfer arrival fee still stands from all the way back in 2001-01, when Jason Euell arrived from First Division side, Wimbledon FC for £6.75m. Along with Euell, arrived a young British right-back for £5.40m from Tottenham Hotspur, named Luke Young.

These are the Addicks two highest transfer arrivals in history. Charlton’s first 2019 summer signing ahead of the new season, was centre-forward Macauley Bonne. Bonne arrived from Leyton Orient for just £200k, and is the 78th most expensive signing for the club which shows how the Addicks like to do their business.

As for record transfer departure fees, Charlton do not have a history for selling players for big money either, and only two players have been sold for over £10m. Darren Bent famously joined Charlton back in 2005-06 from Ipswich Town.

The 21-year-old centre-forward arrived for just over £4m, and was an instant hit, scoring almost one in two he caught the eye of Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur for a club-record fee of £22.28m.

Bent was Charlton’s top goal-scorer for two consecutive seasons before joining Spurs, and originally joined from Ipswich for an initial fee of £2.5m, though this would rise due to an agreed number of appearances for Charlton and England he would make.

Another record transfer sale at the time was former England international central midfielder, Scott Parker, who left the Addicks as an academy graduate in 2003-04. The former youth player started off his career at Charlton, before securing a big-money move to Premier League giants, Chelsea for just over £13m.

Famous Charlton Athletic Transfers

One of, if not one of the most famous Charlton players who has gone on to achieve great things so far in his young career, is England international and Liverpool centre-back, Joe Gomez. Gomez was another academy graduate from Charlton, and he began his youth career back in 2007.

In 2015, the 18-year-old caught the eye of European giants, Liverpool, and he made his first ever move for £4.41m. Since then, Gomez has gone on to win the Champions League with Liverpool and is about to win the Premier League along with the world’s best defender, Virgil van Dijk, who has taken him under his wing. Joe Gomez has recently also earnt his first call up to the senior England squad, and none of this would be possible without Charlton Athletic growing and selling the future star.
