Chelsea have enjoyed a seriously impressive transfer window this summer and look fired up and ready to attack the Premier League.
The Blues finished in a respectable fourth place last season but, with their flurry of recent recruits, they will be hoping for an improvement this time around.
Adding the likes of Timo Werner, Hakim Ziyech and Kai Havertz to their roster will undoubtedly make Chelsea more of a threat in front of goal. They have also strengthened their defence with the likes of Thiago Silva and Ben Chilwell coming in.
Could Chelsea win the Premier League this season?
However, despite their mouth-watering transfer window, Alan Shearer doesn’t think the Blues will ride off into the sunset this season.
“City are not the only team who will think they are capable of closing the gap on Liverpool. Chelsea have spent £200m already, so it is clear what their intentions are,” the former Newcastle star told BBC Sport (via The Sport Review).
“Suddenly his [Lampard] target goes from hoping they can get in the top four, to a demand that they challenge for the title.
“You don’t spend that sort of money otherwise but, while I am sure they will improve, I still think winning the league will be beyond them.”
Chelsea are also still hoping to sign a new goalkeeper this window along with West Ham’s Declan Rice. Lampard and co have been monitoring the 21-year-old for some time now and a deal could be on the horizon.
Liverpool have already started their season with a win over Leeds on Saturday. Despite a close 4-3 scoreline, the Reds clinched maximum points and have hit the ground running. Chelsea will be keeping one eye on the opposition as they push to bridge the gap, with victory at Brighton tonight required to keep pace with the 2019/20 champions.
