Former Manchester United ace Dion Dublin has lauded Olivier Giroud for his performance against Wolves on Sunday.
Chelsea’s final victory of the Premier League season sees them secure Champions League football for the 2020/21 campaign. They finish this term on 66 points, level with Manchester United who sit ahead only on goal difference.
Mason Mount and Giroud were the men to bank the three points and cement their spot ahead of Leicester, whose declining form saw them drop out of the Champions League race.
Who would you rather see start up front for Chelsea?
During BBC Sport’s coverage of the Stamford Bridge fixture, Dublin was full of praise for the Frenchman after his goal doubled Chelsea’s lead (via The Sport Review).
“That’s what big players do, they give you big performances – and Olivier Giroud has never let Frank Lampard down,” he stated. “Goals, assists, this is the kind of player you need in a position like this.”
It took until Tammy Abraham’s injury earlier this season before Giroud was called upon to lead the front-line. Since football restarted, the 33-year-old has been one of Chelsea’s most clinical in front of goal. According to Transfermarkt, Giroud has scored in six out the nine games following the break, which takes his season tally up to eight Premier League goals.
Even after Abraham returned from injury, Lampard relied on Giroud despite the England international having the better goal return, with 15 for the campaign (as per Transfermarkt).
Timo Werner recently touched down in England and will undoubtedly become Chelsea’s first choice striker next season. Now, Lampard has a huge task on his hands as he decides who will be the German’s immediate back-up between Giroud and Abraham.
