Chelsea are preparing to face off against London rivals Tottenham Hotspur in their next Carabao Cup clash.
The Blues made easy work of brushing aside Barnsley in the previous round of the competition. A 6-0 allowed new signing Kai Havertz to make a statement, with Ben Chilwell also getting some action for his new side.
However, their form didn’t last long after a shock performance from West Bromwich Albion caused an upset for Frank Lampard’s men. A trio of goals inside the first half hour made it difficult for the Blues, but they were able to come back fighting and secure a 3-3 draw at The Hawthorns.
Which Chelsea goalkeeper should start against Spurs?
Fuelled by the disappointment from their previous Premier League result, Chelsea will be hoping to do a number over Spurs and continue their Carabao Cup run. In his recent press conference, Lampard said: ” [Edouard] Mendy and Chilwell are in the squad for tomorrow,” (via football.london).
Mendy is the newest signing of the west Londoners and he could be the last of a very impressive flurry of new recruits. He joined from Rennes earlier this month for a fee of £22million, brought in to serve as direct competition for Kepa Arrizabalaga.
The club’s first choice goalkeeper was less than impressive last season and has seemingly carried his poor run of form into the new campaign. He has been dropped on several occasions in favour of Willy Caballero.
Spurs were given a bye in the Carabao Cup due to opponents Leyton Orient confirming a large case of positive Covid-19 tests. Due to this, they will be more prepared than Chelsea and could put up a fight for their place in the next round.
With Mendy and Chilwell available, it will be surprising not to see them both start in a big statement from Lampard to try and grab a win in this upcoming London derby.
