Chelsea manager Frank Lampard has been waxing lyrical over defender and club captain Cesar Azpilicueta’s performances this season.
The Spaniard has been an almost ever-present figure in Chelsea’s 2019/20 campaign, missing just five matches across all competitions (via Transfermarkt). He has also made the manager’s experimental lineups in defence a smooth transition, playing across the back four to accommodate Lampard’s changes.
“His level of performance and impact on the group as captain, I can’t understate it. It has been amazing,” the 42-year-old told TEAMtalk. “His performances for a huge part of the season, his attitude, his application every single day. It is an absolute standard for any young player.”

Indeed, Azpilicueta has set a fine example for upcoming players and any new additions to the club. As a veteran of the game, the 30-year-old has made a total of 385 appearances for the west London outfit since signing in 2012 from Marseille for a fee of £6.5m (via BBC Sport).
“He is an epitome of the club,” Lampard continued. “The unfortunate thing for us, and everyone, is that we don’t have our fans in the stadium.
“Because when you have a player like Azpi, he is the one fans look at and say ‘look at that, that’s how we feel about Chelsea Football Club’. He is that, and he is a captain for that reason.”
Azpilicueta may be approaching the latter stages of his career but, judging by Lampard’s comments and his consistent use of the Spaniard throughout the season, he remains a key presence in the Blues- line-up.
