Chelsea have joined the race to sign Benfica midfielder and World Cup star Enzo Fernandez, according to recent reports.

The Lowdown: Blues make moves...

Blues boss Graham Potter and club owner Todd Boehly have reportedly been busy behind the scenes ahead of what could be a hectic January transfer window.

The Premier League giants are closing in on deals for the likes of Vasco de Gama starlet Andrey Santos among others, whilst the likes of Josko Gvardiol of RB Leipzig are being repeatedly linked with the west Londoners.

After the conclusion of this year's World Cup in Qatar, a host of the tournament's brightest players are now attracting real interest, including Argentina ace Fernandez.

The Latest: Chelsea join Fernandez transfer race...

According to Portuguese newspaper Record, via news aggregator All About Argentina, Chelsea have joined the chase for the Benfica star alongside Real Madrid, Liverpool, Paris Saint-Germain, Manchester City and Manchester United.

An offer of €100m (£88m) has also been made to the Lisbon outfit, but the club in question is unnamed, meaning it could be any of the aforementioned six prospective suitors.

The Verdict: Fantastic player...

The tough-tackling Fernandez featured in every game en route to the World Cup final in Qatar and more than played his part in Argentina eventually winning the tournament.

He was a phenomenal asset for Lionel Scaloni's team, averaging a higher rate of tackles per 90 than any Argentine player whilst also chipping in with a goal and an assist (WhoScored).

Called 'sensational' by reporter Matt Smith, signing the 21-year-old could seriously strengthen Potter's options at Chelsea, but it appears that Benfica are set to play hardball over a transfer next month.
