Chelsea now looking at Moises Caicedo as Declan Rice alternative

Chelsea now looking at Moises Caicedo as Declan Rice alternative - Chelsea News

Chelsea are now looking at signing Brighton & Hove Albion midfielder Moises Caicedo, according to a new report.

The Lowdown: Chelsea targeting midfielders

It has now been reported by journalist Simon Phillips that Chelsea have completed a deal for Benfica midfielder Enzo Fernandez, with the Argentinian set to arrive at Stamford Bridge for an initial £106m.

However, with both N’Gole Kante and Jorginho still yet to commit to new contracts, amid their current deals being up at the end of the season, Graham Potter may choose to bring in another reinforcement at central-midfield, and Caicedo is being considered.

The Latest: Caicedo’s an option

According to The Athletic, Declan Rice is still admired by Chelsea chiefs, but he won’t be leaving West Ham until the summer, and he won’t come cheap, especially considering that he is being pursued by other clubs too.

As such, the Ecuadorian is name-checked as someone that the Blues are looking at as a potentially less-costly option, but previous reports have indicated that he would still set them back around £60m.

The Verdict: Get it done?

There is no doubting that the 21-year-old is a fantastic player with a very bright future ahead of him, with journalist Jules Breach describing him as a ‘baller‘ who is ‘absolutely everywhere on the pitch’.

The youngster’s performances over the past year make him well-suited as a potential Kante heir, displaying his tackling ability by averaging 2.75 tackles per 90, in the 84th percentile compared to his positional peers.

However, Chelsea already appear to have spent big on Fernandez, and it is vital that they avoid putting themselves in a position where they cannot bring Rice to the club in the next transfer window.

Caicedo, while somewhat cheaper, is not yet at the level of the Englishman, who averages more interceptions, a higher pass completion rate and more dribbles completed per 90, and so Potter should wait until the summer before making another midfield addition.
