Tim Sherwood believes that Ruben Loftus-Cheek is Chelsea’s standout young talent, despite his lengthy spell on the sidelines.
Frank Lampard is fielding a lot of youngsters in his current squad and it seems the faith is paying off. The likes of Tammy Abraham and Mason Mount have established themselves as first team regulars and have had impressive 2019/20 campaigns, scoring 21 goals between them this term.
However, despite their promising numbers in front of goal, Sherwood believes that Chelsea still have their most valuable young player waiting in the wings. Loftus-Cheek has been limited to just three Premier League appearances this season after suffering an achilles injury in May last year (via BBC Sport).
Can Chelsea challenge for the Premier League title next season?
“Look at the young kids that he’s [Lampard] blooding this year,’ Sherwood told DAZN (via Metro). “They’re gaining experience and the value that’s been placed on that group of players [will benefit them]. But it’s without their best one – their best kid in my opinion is Ruben Loftus-Cheek. I think he’s a Rolls-Royce of a footballer.”
Prior to his injury last season, Loftus-Cheek tallied 10 goals and five assists for Chelsea (via Transfermarkt). If Lampard opts to make him a focal point in midfield, he could return to netting double figures next campaign.
The 24-year-old made a 14-minute cameo against Watford at the weekend and missed a big chance to net himself a goal (via Sofascore). However, after being out for so long, it’s natural that he could need time to re-adjust to Premier League pace.
Chelsea’s next fixture will see them take on Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park tomorrow evening, a game in which Loftus-Cheek could be involved from the start.
