Chelsea have now entered the race to sign Sporting CP right-back and Tottenham target Pedro Porro, according to journalist Simon Phillips.

The Lowdown: Interest in Porro

Spurs are believed to have a strong interest in signing Porro, who has a £39.7m release clause, and the player himself is said to be keen on the move to north London, according to transfer guru Fabrizio Romano.

At one stage, Spurs were even close to completing the transfer, but it has now emerged that Daniel Levy is insisting on paying a cut-price fee for the right-back, so the deal has started to stall, and Chelsea could now hijack the move...

The Latest: Chelsea enter Porro race

As per journalist Simon Phillips, the Spaniard is a name being looked at by the Blues in the January transfer window, with Malo Gusto and Josip Juranovic also detailed as options.

Graham Potter had initially been willing to wait until the summer before bolstering his right-back area, but the latest injury setback suffered by Reece James means that he has now brought these plans forward.

The Verdict: Get it done?

Journalist Jack Collins has lauded the 23-year-old as 'sensational' and a 'baller' for his goal-scoring exploits with Sporting, as he has really started to make a name for himself as an attacking full-back during his time with the Portuguese club.

It is vital that the player brought in by Potter is able to replace James' contributions to the attacking output, with the Englishman averaging 0.28 assists per 90 over the past year, and Porro has more than demonstrated he would be able to do so, averaging 0.39 assists in the same timeframe, in the 99th percentile compared to his positional peers.

With the move to Spurs currently faltering, Potter has been presented with a great chance to sign a very promising right-back, who still has plenty of time to develop even further at 23, and so the Blues should pay the reported £39.7m release clause to take the lead in the transfer race.
