Chelsea: Michy Batshuayi’s performance for Belgium could make Frank Lampard reconsider long-term future

Chelsea: Michy Batshuayi’s performance for Belgium could make Frank Lampard reconsider long-term future - Chelsea News

Michy Batshuayi put in a solid shift for his country on Tuesday after bagging a brace against Iceland in the Nations League.

The Chelsea striker started for Belgium as they hosted Erik Hamren’s side at the King Baudouin Stadium.

Holmbert Aron Fridjonsson opened up the scoring in what looked potentially a shock result, but the Belgians were too strong for the Icelandic side.

The home team made easy work of blowing Iceland out of the park. After Axel Witsel levelled the scoreline in the 13th minute, there was no stopping Belgium.

A double from Batshuayi plus an extra goal each from Dries Mertens and Jeremy Doku saw them mercilessly ride out a stunning 5-1 victory. Their latest Nations League result marks their 12th consecutive win overall.

Batshuayi’s performance earned him a Sofascore rating of 8.3. Along with his brace, he made one key pass and two successful dribbles out of his attempted three. The striker also had three shots blocked, which highlights his clinical shift in front of goal.

Whilst his international career is currently gleaming, Batshuayi is in a grey area with his club.

As it stands, Chelsea are looking to offload the £12.6million-valued frontman after he has slipped drastically down the pecking order.

Gerrard made more appearances for Liverpool than Lampard did for Chelsea, true or false?

The arrival of Timo Werner, plus substitute options Tammy Abraham and Olivier Giroud could mean Batshuayi will be offloaded permanently. He is currently set for a loan move to Crystal Palace, however the Blues are also going to extend his contract by a further 12 months.

Considering his recent solid performance for Belgium, he certainly showed that he does have quality in front of goal. If he can replicate that in the upcoming season at Selhurst Park,  it could force Frank Lampard to rethink his options and potentially offer Batshuayi a place in the team again when he returns to Stamford Bridge following the loan spell.
