Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has named the Chelsea player he hopes isn’t in form when his side takes to the pitch under the Wembley lights in the FA Cup final this evening.
In a a recent press conference with arsenal.com, the Spaniard has highlighted Olivier Giroud as Chelsea’s most dangerous player, and one that he clearly feels poses a threat to the Gunners.
Who will win this season's FA Cup?
“I’m not surprised [by Giroud’s form], because I know Oli. He is a fighter,” Arteta commented. “Even when he was playing for us and he had some difficult moments, he always reacted.”
The 33-year-old has certainly caught the eye of many since English football resumed, particularly Frank Lampard, who has been waxing lyrical over his recent performances. Since the restart, Giroud has netted seven goals in the absence of Tammy Abraham, giving the manager something to think about heading into next season.
A lot of talk has linked Giroud to a Stamford Bridge exit but, given his red hot form, the club likely want to keep the Frenchman tied down to the club.
His threat in front of goal will be something that Arsenal’s defence could struggle to get under control, particularly as an ex-Gunner himself.
“I’m glad that he is doing really well, but hopefully tomorrow he won’t do that well,” Arteta concluded.
His fear is certainly justified, as Lampard will almost definitely start Giroud up front in the FA Cup final. With Arsenal desperate for a win, it could be Chelsea’s game to win if they can catch their London rivals out on the counter-attack.
