Newest Chelsea signing Timo Werner has paid homage to three former Blues players he wants to emulate.
In his first full interview with his new club, the 24-year-old has shed light on his conversations with Frank Lampard over where he will fit in at Chelsea. He has also outlined the team’s rich history and named the three players that inspire him as he opens a new chapter in his career.
Will Timo Werner be Chelsea's top scorer next season?
“I know of the players before when they won the Champions League with [Didier] Drogba, with my new manager Frank Lampard, Petr Cech as the technical advisor,” Werner told chelseafc.com. “It is like a little dream for me but I want to become, not a same player like them, but I want to be part of a new era here so I will play to try to give my best.”
The clinical forward joins the west London outfit after impressing in his final season in the Bundesliga. Werner notched a total of 28 goals and eight assists for the season, finishing as the league’s second top scorer behind only Robert Lewandowksi with 34 (via BBC Sport).
The Germany ace will link up with international teammate Antonio Rudiger at Stamford Bridge and has already been training with the first team. Many Chelsea fans have been itching to see Werner in action and are particularly excited to watch the chemistry develop between him and fellow ex-Bundesliga man Christian Pulisic.
Werner is Lampard’s second signing of the summer and it doesn’t look as though the club are about to slow down on their spending. With a freshly kitted-out squad, Chelsea could be ones to watch to challenge for silverware next season.
