According to a recent report by the Daily Mirror, Chelsea are ‘ready’ to move for Manchester City defender John Stones even if they sign Brighton captain Lewis Dunk – and the move, whilst a gamble, could hugely pay off for Marina Granovskaia as she spearheads the club’s summer spending spree.
Having already secured deals for the likes of Timo Werner and Hakim Ziyech, both of whom cost over £80 million combined, this report claims that Chelsea are also eyeing a defensive restructure with homegrown additions.
Dunk, currently rated at £40 million, could be the first of the pair to put-pen-to-paper on a Stamford Bridge move, with the club also looking to land Stones regardless of the outcome surrounding his compatriot.
Would John Stones be a great Chelsea signing?
Yes, could regain his form and become a beast
No, absolute liability
The £100,000-per-week centre-back has endured a difficult campaign under City boss Pep Guardiola, with pundit Alan Shearer stating that he would be ‘rubbing his hands together’ if he were to play against the Englishman and Nicolas Otamendi (The Sun).
Starting just 12 Premier League games over last season, despite averaging an impressive 94% pass accuracy in that time (WhoScored), Stones is now in a precarious situation at the Etihad, something that Chelsea could take advantage of.
Despite his lack of form, Stones did earn plaudits over City’s title-winning campaigns alongside the likes of Vincent Kompany and Aymeric Laporte, with the 6ft 2 colossus famously clearing a Mohamed Salah attempt off the line to gift the Sky Blues a vital win in the 2018/2019 title race.
Moments like that could help Lampard’s team claw their way back into title contention – the player is also homegrown and just 26-years-old.
Valued at just £27 million by Transfermarkt, Granovskaia could be on the verge of a potentially huge Chelsea coup as despite losing his way a little, there is still potential for Stones to be a superb Premier League defender based on his form in the past.
