Inter Milan are circling Chelsea’s only two fit senior left-backs as part of Antonio Conte’s summer shopping list.
The former Blues manager looks set to raid his old club as Inter target both Marcos Alonso and Emerson Palmieri (according to Gazzetta dello Sport, via Express).
If the Serie A giants land a deal for the duo, Chelsea will be without a fully fit and recognised player to occupy the left-back role.
Will Chelsea sign Ben Chilwell this summer?
The London outfit are undergoing a period of transition, with Lampard guiding them into promising waters. As it stands, Chelsea are on their way to securing Champions League football next season. They will also be joined by new signings Hakim Ziyech and Timo Werner, who should undoubtedly help them challenge in both Europe and the Premier League.
However, the Blues must act fast as they risk losing two senior left-backs. They are heavily linked with Leicester’s Ben Chilwell, who will reportedly command a fee of £80m (via Evening Standard).
Chelsea’s shock defeat against West Ham earlier this week will be a wake-up call for where they must bolster the ranks. Recruiting defensively is a priority of Lampard’s and Chilwell would be a solid asset to the back-line.
In fact, Leicester’s left-back has made more clearances (2) and won more tackles (1.6) per game than Alonso’s respective returns of 1.4 and 1.5 for those metrics (via WhoScored). Signing Chilwell should certainly be smart business but Chelsea must look to get the deal moving or risk a huge dearth of left-backs if Conte gets his men.
Not replacing those potential two departures could be disastrous for the club but bringing in a proven defender could improve the Blues’ chances of success. Whichever way the scales tip is up to Lampard and how quickly they can strike a deal.
