Chelsea: Danny Mills believes Chelsea must sign Nick Pope to challenge for Premier League - Chelsea Transfer Rumours

Chelsea’s goalkeeping woes continue as they look ahead to the upcoming season with no reliable first choice shot-stopper on the roster.

Kepa Arrizabalaga has been dropped by Frank Lampard following a disappointing season, with Willy Caballero part of the Blues side to lose Saturday’s FA Cup final. It’s certainly an issue that the manager needs to address and Danny Mills believes it should be remedied before the new campaign.

Speaking to Football Insider, the former Leeds United man has discussed Chelsea’s link to Burnley’s Nick Pope.

“I think Pope is ready to be a goalkeeper at an elite club,” Mills commented. “There will always be people that question his distribution but hang on a minute, he has never been asked to play that way so we do not know if it is a massive issue or not.

“I do not buy into that. He can certainly adapt.”

Pope’s record for the 2019/20 season has been impressive and certainly more attractive than Kepa’s. The England international made the fourth highest amount of saves with 120 compared to the Chelsea man’s 55. Pope also kept 15 clean sheets, just one behind Golden Glove winner Ederson, whereas Kepa was only able to keep eight (via Premier League).

“Chelsea are not buying Nick Pope for the future, they are buying Nick Pope for now,” Mills continued. “If they want to go and challenge next season they need a keeper now. That is what Liverpool did with Alisson. They did not wait for some kid, they addressed the situation.”

Gerrard made more appearances for Liverpool than Lampard did for Chelsea, true or false?

Indeed, Liverpool splashed a handsome amount of cash on their Brazilian goalkeeper, who has played an integral part in their first Premier League title. The Reds signed Alisson in 2018 for £66.8million.

Chelsea have already made two impressive signings through Hakim Ziyech and Timo Werner but without defensive reinforcements, the Blues could struggle.

According to the Daily Star, Burnley could demand up to £50m for Pope, which is a huge amount less than reported target Jan Oblak, who has a whopping £110m release clause (via Goal.com).
