Chelsea aren’t holding back in making themselves known on the transfer market this summer.
As the Blues look ahead to a new season, Frank Lampard wants to ensure he is well-equipped to challenge the likes of Liverpool and Manchester City for glory.
He has already made strong moves by welcoming Hakim Ziyech and Timo Werner to the club, with major money target Kai Havertz also close to signing. Now, Lampard is reportedly looking to sign another marquee striker to further kit out his attack.
Will Timo Werner be Chelsea's top scorer next season?
“You talk about another marquee signing coming through the door but they’ve already got one in Timo Werner so I mean that doesn’t bode well for Tammy [Abraham].”
Indeed, the Englishman was in fine form this season before injury struck. The 22-year-old was sidelined for four games after suffering a knock and an ankle injury. But even following his return to training, Lampard opted in favour of Olivier Giroud to lead the frontline.
The France international played a crucial role in Chelsea’s top four finish, scoring seven times in ten appearances once football resumed (via Sofascore). With both Werner and Giroud at his disposal, Lampard may glance over Abraham when it comes to picking his starting lineup. Adding another marquee attacker to the mix will only cause further complications for the £36million-valued ace.
“He’s been playing behind Giroud, who has been absolutely superb towards the end of the season by the way, and you’re bringing in another superstar like Werner,” Bent continued. “That means potentially Tammy could be third spot already.”
Roman Abramovich has reportedly given a further £120million to Lampard for this window’s business, which is certainly enough to bring in another high-calibre striker. Chelsea have acknowledged their defensive issues and have prioritised a move for a goalkeeper, but if they do target another forward, Abraham could be forced into finding a move away from Stamford Bridge.
