Chelsea have strengthened their squad very well this transfer window after welcoming six major signings through the door.
The addition of veteran Thiago Silva will help to plug the team’s leaky defence, with Ben Chilwell also coming in to help bolster the defence. However, there are some signings both fans and professionals alike are itching to see in action.
Could Timo Werner challenge for this season's Golden Boot?
Chelsea’s double swoop for Timo Werner and Kai Havertz is arguably the best business of the window. Former Liverpool icon Didi Hamann certainly believes so and has tipped the duo for success during their west London tenure.
“I trust both of them to find their way around quickly and assert themselves,” the ex-defender said in his column for Sky Sports Germany (via Sport Witness). “It’s not so much the way the game is played but the mentality that counts. You must be prepared to accept the game.
“Werner coped very well with the situation after the diving accusations. Back then, he showed that he had grown up. I have no doubt that both of them will succeed.”
The accusation Hamann is referring to took place after the forward earned RB Leipzig a penalty back in 2016. The goalkeeper went in the book and the spot-kick was converted, but Werner was subject to a lot of backlash afterwards.
Now 24, the striker has established himself as a fine goal-getter and Frank Lampard will hope he can recreate his recent form this season. Werner tallied 28 goals in 34 league games last campaign, totalling 34 goals and 13 assists in 45 appearances overall (via Transfermarkt).
Hamann’s former club Liverpool missed out on signing Werner despite months of ongoing talks. The German even admitted he thought he suited Jurgen Klopp’s style, but the two parties were unable to reach an agreement and Chelsea swooped in.
Now he is set to make a serious impact at Stamford Bridge ahead of a very exciting 2020/21 season.
