Atletico Madrid’s Jan Oblak is one of the latest targets to appear on Chelsea’s summer radar.
The Blues are seemingly on the market for a replacement for Kepa Arrizabalaga after he has failed to impress Frank Lampard this season. Prior to the break, the Spaniard was benched in favour of Willy Caballero after a string of poor performances. Now, he could be on his way out of the club after just two seasons in blue.
Would you like to see Chelsea sign Jan Oblak?
According to the Daily Star, Atletico manager Diego Simeone is ‘not surprised’ that Chelsea are eyeing up a move for Oblak.
“He is a decisive player for us,” the Argentinian said. “But he is the captain and our participation every year in the Champions League helps us keep our best players so I hope he will continue with us.”
Indeed, Oblak helped his side knock reigning champions Liverpool out of Europe back in March. His strong presence in goal made for a tough match for the Reds and they ultimately bowed out of the competition on a 4-2 aggregate in Atletico’s favour.
Targeting expensive goalkeepers seems to be becoming a trend for Chelsea, who splashed £71million on Kepa in 2018, making him the most expensive goalkeeper on record. Now, the Blues could be looking at an even bigger sum.
Oblak is contracted with the La Liga side until 2023, so with no rush to sell, Atletico could force Frank Lampard and Co to pay his mammoth £103m release clause.
With Hakim Ziyech and Timo Werner already confirmed, Chelsea could be moving onto even bigger fish as they continue to bolster their squad.
