Chelsea have announced that Ross Barkley will spend the remainder of the 2020/21 season on loan with Aston Villa.
Despite their major haul of new signings this transfer window, the Blues have been unable to balance their books by shipping out some of their current players. Barkley is the first of Frank Lampard’s senior personnel to make a move away from the club in any sort of capacity.
Should Chelsea keep or sell Marcos Alonso?
The official Chelsea Instagram has posted the decision and has wished the former Everton man well amid his temporary move.
However, some fans aren’t happy with seeing him loaned out and have highlighted a number of players who were perhaps better suited for a move away. Here are just some replies:
djcsneakercleaning: Ridiculous. He’s stepped up a hell of a lot since lockdown was lifted last season – outrageous decision
saifsafuan: Should’ve loaned out RLC not him
golden_child_music: Mount should be the one to go on loan not Barkley
sam_matthews97: Poor decision
Barkley joined the west Londoners from his boyhood club in 2018 for a fee of £15million. He went on to make a total of 86 appearances for the Blues, tallying 11 goals and 11 assists in that time (via Transfermarkt).
Although he hasn’t started a Premier League game since July, the 26-year-old showed his worth when coming off the bench and featuring in Chelsea’s cup runs. Last season Barkley notched four goal contributions in their FA Cup run, including the winning goal over Leicester in the quarter-final.
The Blues have until Monday to finalise any further outgoings and make back some of the money they have splashed this window. Will anyone else join Barkley out the door?
