According to a report from the Guardian, Chelsea are still ‘keen‘ on completing a deal to sign Leicester City star Ben Chilwell following the continued transfer saga surrounding Kai Havertz – but the club may need to offload and employ a sell-to-buy philosophy.
Sporting director Marina Granovskaia has already been making waves so far this window, completing two deals for Timo Werner and Hakim Ziyech, both of whom cost a combined £80 million.
Should Ben Chilwell be made a priority signing?
Yes, more important Chelsea sign a defender
No, he's average
Following a transfer-ban, it appears Chelsea haven’t been afraid to splash the cash, but an incoming deal for Havertz which could cost £77.2 million may force the club to sell stars and reduce debt margin.
Jorginho and Emerson Palmieri are the two most likely candidates to leave west London following links to Serie A, and manager Frank Lampard could use a portion of those funds to assist a swoop for Chilwell.
Chelsea have been linked with the England defender for some time, along with Man City, but the Guardian claim interest remains firm and the Blues are still ‘keen’ on acquiring the left-back.
Given the fact Lampard’s side conceded more goals than any other side in the top 10 last season, clearly a defensive reshuffle would be beneficial, with Chilwell seeming like a prime target at full-back.
To say the £36m-valued man has potential would be an understatement, but it remains to be seen when or if he will sign on the dotted line.
