Former Chelsea man Glen Johnson thinks the Blues would be making a mistake by letting Willian leave this summer.
The Brazilian winger is set to leave the London outfit at the end of the season upon the expiry of his contract. The club offered him a short-term extension in order for him to complete the current campaign but nothing permanent is in place.
Speaking to talkSPORT (via Goal.com), Johnson has given his thoughts on Willian leaving in the summer. “I still think he’s a top player. Those sort of players, those players with that level of professionalism, they are hard to replace,” he said.
The 31-year-old first joined the club back in 2013 from Russian side Anzhi Makhachkala (via BBC Sport). Chelsea snapped him up for a fee of £30m and he has been a loyal servant to the team for seven years.
Should Chelsea offer Willian a new contract?
Amassing a total of 330 appearances, Willian has contributed 59 goals and 59 assists whilst helping to guide his team to two Premier League titles, Europa League glory and an FA Cup success (via Transfermarkt).
“Financially, business-wise, trying to replace Willian – how much is that going to cost?” Johnson asked. “You are going to let a top player walk out of the door for nothing. It’s going to cost you a good £20m to replace him. I’d definitely like to see him stay there for another year.”
Fellow winger Pedro is also set to leave Chelsea this summer as Frank Lampard looks to rely more on younger players and utilise new signings Hakim Ziyech and Timo Werner. Unfortunately for Willian, it seems that a team in he was once ever-present has evolved without him.
The club could certainly benefit from having the Brazilian’s talent and expertise on the bench but an international star likely won’t want to play second fiddle for the rest of his career.
