According to an exclusive update courtesy of talkSPORT, Brighton have insisted that defender and captain Lewis Dunk is ‘not for sale’ despite Chelsea’s reported interest – potentially dealing a blow to Frank Lampard’s hopes of reinforcing his defence ahead of the 2020/21 Premier League campaign.
The outlet’s transfer insider, journalist Alex Crook, has detailed that the Seagulls are ‘determined’ to keep hold of one of their best assets despite reports that Chelsea were eyeing up a £40m move.
Dunk, who started 36 Premier League matches last season, was instrumental to Brighton’s survival in the top flight as they avoided the drop zone at the expense of Watford, Bournemouth and Norwich.
Who would you prefer Chelsea to sign?
According to WhoScored, whilst averaging an impressive 87% pass accuracy out from the back, Dunk also made 3.4 clearances per match for Brighton over his league appearances – racking up better numbers in that regard than Chelsea defenders Antonio Rudiger, Fikayo Tomori and Andreas Christensen.
Described as Brighton’s answer to Virgil van Dijk by ex-Seagulls manager Chris Hughton, the former Premier League boss also lauded Dunk as an ‘outstanding’ defensive asset (Belfast Telegraph), with all this praise potentially supporting why Chelsea are reportedly so keen.
However, as per talkSPORT, Chelsea seem to have missed out on Dunk given his club’s stance, with an alternative potentially waiting in the form of John Stones.
The Daily Mirror reported recently that Stones would be targeted by sporting director Marina Granovskaia regardless of what happens with Dunk, but now the Englishman looks like the Blues’ fallback option following this update.
Whether or not Brighton’s stance will change, maybe with a huge offer, remains to be seen – but the south coast club have seemingly made it clear that he is not up for grabs.
