Pundit Owen Hargreaves has been discussing Chelsea’s latest transfer plans, and he is drooling over the prospect of Timo Werner signing for the club in the summer.
According to The Express, the Blues have triggered Werner’s £53 million release clause before Liverpool, who were the favourites, and the London side now look odds-on to sign the player.
This would strengthen their attacking options massively and could be the catalyst as Chelsea look to push on next season. Speaking to BT Sport, via TEAMtalk, Hargreaves seems to agree as he said: “Well I think he’s perfect, I think he could have been perfect for Man United as well but I think it’s brilliant for Frank Lampard and Chelsea.
“I think they needed to make a statement and they’ve done that. To go with [Hakim] Ziyech and all these terrific young players, I think Chelsea are building something, not to compete next season for the Premier League but definitely in two or three years’ time to compete to win the Premier League. Terrific signing, I think Chelsea fans are going to love him.”
It’s hard to disagree, the German striker is only 24 years-old and has had a terrific season, scoring 32 goals and picking up ten assists in 44 appearances in all competitions, via WhoScored. This highlights how great he is in front of goal and to be tallying this many goals in one season at such a young age emphasises the potential that he has.
The fact that in these appearances he manages on average 3.7 shots, 1.5 key passes and 1.7 successful dribbles per game further shows the quality Chelsea could have in their ranks, and these stats are better than any striker the Blues currently have.
No doubt it will be a ‘terrific signing’ if Frank Lampard manages to acquire the German, and their attacking unit would scare all opposition defences if Werner is added to it.
