Chelsea are trying to compete with Liverpool and Manchester City for the title next season, and the latest reports suggest that a player wanted by many of European’s best club’s is nearing a move to the Blues this summer.
According to The Guardian, the club are interested in German attacking midfielder Kai Havertz, and the media outlet have provided a huge update which outlines that the Blues have contacted Bayer Leverkusen over a possible deal, this will most likely be through Sporting Director Marina Granovskaia.
Should the club sign Havertz?
Other teams interested in the prospect include Bayern Munich, Manchester United and Real Madrid, so this transfer news will go down to the wire, but the fact that Chelsea have instigated contact emphasises how much they want to get the player.
Leverkusen are reportedly looking for around £89 million for the German international, so it will be interesting to see whether Chelsea press ahead and pay such a high fee given the current climate.
Havertz is only 20 years-old but is setting the Bundesliga alight as he has scored eleven goals whilst picking up five assists in 26 appearances, per WhoScored. His attacking intent is further highlighted by his 1.9 shots, 2.1 key passes and two successful dribbles per game.
His key passes would rank as the highest in comparison to the Chelsea squad and emphasises why the club want to acquire the player. For someone succeeding at such a high level whilst so young, it looks like a transfer that Chelsea should definitely be making in order to compete for the title again.
They should not be put off by the price tag as he could be someone that stays in the Chelsea side for many years and they are lacking an attacking midfielder that boasts as much quality creatively as Havertz. Indeed, whilst Mason Mount has done well this season, his combined goals and assists tally is less than his German counterpart’s.
