Chelsea have been heavily linked with a swoop for Declan Rice from London rivals West Ham.
According to Football Insider, the Irons aren’t budging on their hefty £80m asking price for the 21-year-old and are not willing to accept a player-plus-cash deal. The Blues reportedly tabled an offer of three different senior players for West Ham from which to choose prior to this update.
In an earlier Football Insider report, Frank Lampard was alleged to be willing to hand over Fikayo Tomori, Kurt Zouma or Michy Batshuayi on either a loan or permanent basis.
Should Chelsea sign Declan Rice?
This statement from West Ham has thrown a spanner in the works for Chelsea’s summer plans. An exchange deal would have been ideal for the Champions League chasers, who are planning to splurge huge money on major target Kai Havertz.
The addition of the Bayer Leverkusen midfielder would be Chelsea’s third attacking recruit of the summer, so signing someone like Rice would help balance it out with a more defence-minded arrival. Having frequently played at centre-back, the England international has enjoyed playing a more advanced role this season in which he has been operating as defensive midfielder.
Rice has been ever-present in West Ham’s side in the Premier League this season, playing every single minute of the campaign. He has contributed one goal and two assists for his team this campaign and has worn the captain’s armband four times (via Transfermarkt).
If Chelsea want to secure the signing of Rice this season, they will have to return to the drawing board and weigh up the probability of parting with a further £80m this summer on top of their previous splurges.
