Chelsea continue to scour the transfer market for their next exciting signing and now the ‘next Virgil van Dijk’ has been linked with a possible move to Stamford Bridge.
The Daily Mail reported that highly-rated teenage prospect Xavier Mbuyamba could be headed to London this summer. The 18-year-old enters the summer as a free agent after his contract with Barcelona expired in June.
Chelsea have already made moves for the Dutchman, who has been likened to Liverpool defender Van Dijk in terms of performances and quality. The Blues had Mbuyamba at Cobham last year for training sessions but were unable to officially act on their interest due to his contract with the La Liga side.
Now, with no terms tying him down to Barcelona, the centre-back is free to join the west London outfit. However, the youngster has attracted a lot of attention from all across Europe, including Real Madrid, Juventus and Inter Milan (as per Daily Mail).
Should Chelsea sign Lewis Dunk this summer?
Mbuyamba’s representative Carlos Barros has been waxing lyrical over Chelsea amid the rumours linking his client with a move to Stamford Bridge.
“Chelsea have the best papers. Of course we discussed this extensively last year,” he told Voetbal International earlier this year (via Daily Mail). “Chelsea gave a fantastic presentation. There is a unique football atmosphere there. You immediately sit with the first-team players during lunch and the club has outlined a very ambitious plan for Xavier.”
Frank Lampard has made a name for himself as a manager who likes to give his youth players a chance. Indeed, this tactic has really paid off this season, with Tammy Abraham, Mason Mount and Reece James all shining for the senior team, playing regularly and chipping in with 27 goals between them.
The Blues are in need of new defensive options after conceding 54 league goals last season and, while it’s unlikely that Mbuyamba would walk into the starting XI straight away, he is very much a player for the future. Lampard is arguably one of the best managers to bring out the teen’s talent and nurture the qualities that some have compared to Champions League and Premier League winner Van Dijk.
