Chelsea are close to another summer signing as a move for Malang Sarr nears completion.

The Blues have already impressed with their business this transfer window and now look set to welcome the 21-year-old Frenchman to Stamford Bridge. According to The Athletic's David Ornstein, a potential five-year deal is on the cards for Sarr, who became a free agent this summer.

Chelsea have highlighted their need to expand on their defensive options and match the impressive attacking roster they have built up. Hakim Ziyech and Timo Werner have already joined the club, with Kai Havertz also agreeing terms and close to making the move to West London.

The Blues have prioritised improving their defence after conceding the most amount of goals out of the Premier League top ten last season. They have already made moves towards this by closing in on a deal for fellow free agent Thiago Silva.

Sarr is an extremely different target to 35-year-old veteran Silva, but he fits the bill of Frank Lampard's ongoing youth project at Stamford Bridge.

The Chelsea icon has already proved he can turn young players into fully-fledged senior stars. The likes of Tammy Abraham and Mason Mount have become integral members of Lampard's first team, with Reece James another on the cusp of becoming a senior regular.

Bringing Sarr to the club to play alongside right-back James would be a smart move from Lampard who will undoubtedly get the best out of the 21-year-old. Paired up with Silva and club captain Cesar Azpilicueta – who frequently occupied the left-back role last term – Sarr could accelerate his growth at one of the best clubs in England.

It could also spell the end for senior player Kurt Zouma, who has already been linked to a move away from West London. The fellow Frenchman operated mostly in the left centre-back role, and with Sarr boasting a confident left foot, he could usurp Zouma across the backline.

On a free transfer, the move seems like a no brainer for Chelsea, who have showcased a very impressive youth system. Lampard will relish the challenge of turning Sarr into one of the Premier League's best centre-backs and will be getting a bargain too, with the defender valued at £14.4m.
