Chelsea completed one of the shock signings of the window after announcing the arrival of Timo Werner back in July.
The Blues snuck in through the back door to tie up a deal with the German, who had been heavily linked to Liverpool for months prior.
Even Werner himself admitted he thought he would suit the playing style of the Premier League champions (via Bleacher Report). However, no official move was made from the Reds and Chelsea swooped in.
Could Timo Werner challenge for this season's Golden Boot?
They landed a deal for the former RB Leipzig star and forked out £50million. He became Frank Lampard’s second signing of the window, after Hakim Ziyech.
The manager himself has shed some light on the nature of the move and how he managed to coax the striker to Stamford Bridge.
“You have to try to sell the club, sell how you want the club to move forward,” Lampard told the Daily Star. “I do that to the best of my ability when speaking to players.
“With Timo, we were very, very keen to bring him in. And he needs to feel that from us. I loved everything that he said to me in those conversations.”
Werner seriously impressed with his final season in the Bundesliga. The 24-year-old notched a jaw-dropping 34 goals in 45 total appearances for Leipzig and he will be looking to recreate this form in the Premier League.
He has already hit the ground running in blue after bagging a goal in Chelsea’s preseason match against Brighton. The Blues will face off against the Seagulls again in quick succession as they travel to the Amex stadium this evening.
