Chelsea have been linked to what could be the Premier League signing of the season in Atletico Madrid’s Jan Oblak.
The shot-stopper – who has been viewed by many as one of the best in the world – could be on his way to England in a blockbuster link to Stamford Bridge. Kepa Arrizabalaga has fallen short of the mark this season and Frank Lampard is hunting for a replacement before the new campaign.
Would you like to see Chelsea sign Jan Oblak?
Jermaine Jenas has given his thoughts on the idea of Oblak becoming a Chelsea player. Speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live (via Daily Express), the former Tottenham man said: “They’re already spending a lot of money and I don’t see them being able to get Oblak out of his contract at Atletico Madrid.”
The La Liga side are reportedly not looking to sell up any time soon, with the Slovenian recently extending his contract until 2023 (via Sky Sports). As a result, Chelsea would be forced to activate his release clause, which is upwards of £100million.
“We’re talking £110m to £130m to get him out of that so unless there’s some form of swap deal to soften the blow a bit, I don’t see that happening,” Jenas continued. “We’ve seen a lot of surprises in the past and it wouldn’t shock me.”
Atletico have turned down the idea of a swap deal, with Marina Granovskaia reportedly putting the idea on the table of a player-plus-cash deal involving Kepa. The Daily Mail recently reported that Diego Simeone and Co stated they do not want to discuss business involving the Spanish goalkeeper.
So despite doubts over Chelsea splashing such a high amount of cash, it wouldn’t come as a surprise if Chelsea did manage to land such a huge marquee signing.
Indeed, the Blues are in need of a new goalkeeper and Oblak would certainly be a vast improvement on Kepa, but uncertainties over finances could force the deal to turn cold.
