Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink thinks N’Golo Kante still has a lot to give to Chelsea, despite talks of his departure this window.
Since joining the west London outfit in 2016 after winning the Premier League with Leicester, Kante has had a huge impact on Chelsea. In four years, he has helped his team to a league title, FA Cup and Europa League triumph (via Transfermarkt), but last season may have foreshadowed his exit.
The Frenchman made just 28 appearances in total for the Blues, due to being sidelined with five different injuries across the season. Kante missed a worrying total of 22 games which may have played a part in Frank Lampard deciding to move the team on without him.
Should Chelsea keep or sell N'Golo Kante?
However, Hasselbaink feels that the £72m-valued ace still has a place at Chelsea and will in fact be extremely valuable to the club in the upcoming term.
“Kante will be Chelsea’s most important player this season,” the ex-Blues striker said in an interview with GentingBet (via Metro). “Chelsea are going to attack and be so dominant so I would like to see him a lot more behind the ball than in front of the ball.”
Indeed, Lampard prioritised recruiting new attacking options as he will undoubtedly push to challenge for this season’s Premier League title. Hakim Ziyech marked the first signing of the summer, followed by Timo Werner. Fellow German Kai Havertz also looks set to make the move to London in a mammoth £90m move.
Although Chelsea have brought in defenders Thiago Silva and Ben Chilwell to balance the squad, Kante could still have a part to play in the middle of the park.
“If he can rediscover his form, like it was in the first season under Antonio Conte, or like it was when he was at Leicester, then Chelsea will do really well,” Hasselbaink continued.
The 29-year-old has been named as a player who could be used as a pawn in Lampard’s transfer game. With Inter Milan reportedly interested in him, the Blues could pocket a further €50m (£44.1m) from a late sale of the defensive midfielder.
