Chelsea continue to strengthen their squad as they welcome latest signing Thiago Silva to Stamford Bridge.
The 35-year-old becomes the club’s fifth signing overall and fourth likely to be part of Frank Lampard’s senior squad this season. He joined the club on Friday after agreeing terms for a two-year stint in West London (via chelseafc.com).
Will Thiago Silva be a good signing for Chelsea?
Despite signing as a free agent, Kevin Phillips believes he is one of Lampard’s smartest new additions. He spoke with Football Insider to give his thoughts on how Silva will impact the Blues.
“For someone like [Ben] Chilwell to be learning off Thiago Silva, given his experience, is invaluable,” the ex-Sunderland man commented. “I am really excited by Chelsea this season, I expect them to be challenging. They have done some good business and I do not think they are finished just yet.”
Indeed, the West Londoners are on track to welcome more top talent over the threshold. A deal for Bayer Leverkusen’s Kai Havertz is close to being finalised, and Declan Rice continues to be one of the club’s top targets ahead of the new season.
Silva will undoubtedly be a first team regular, especially with Lampard considering handing the captain’s armband over to him. The Brazilian boasts a total of 510 senior appearances and 30 major accolades, including seven Ligue 1 titles (via Transfermarkt).
“Having Silva through the door will be a huge help to the younger players,” Phillips continued.
Lampard has impressed with his ability to turn youngsters like Mason Mount and Reece James into senior members of the club. However, having a veteran of the game in his arsenal will boost the probability of these players becoming stars as they learn from one of the best.
