Chelsea are desperate to replace Kepa Arrizabalaga in goal ahead of the new season, but bringing in a replacement is proving difficult.
The Spaniard had a disappointing 2019/20 campaign after conceding the most goals (54) out of any other top ten Premier League side. Frank Lampard’s faith in the most expensive goalkeeper in the world has plummeted and he’s now hoping to have a new face between the sticks this coming season.
Would you like Chelsea to sign Edouard Mendy?
One of Chelsea’s top targets is Edouard Mendy, who the Blues were hoping to land for a fee of £22million, despite his initial asking price being £45million. However, a new report from TuttoMercatoWeb (via Sport Witness), claims Rennes will not sell the 28-year-old without a replacement.
The Ligue 1 season has already started and Mendy has played one of his side’s two league appearances so far (via Transfermarkt). Romain Salin started the most recent match against Montpellier, with 17-year-old shot-stopper Pepe Bonet on the bench.
A move may be on the cards though if Mendy is able to push his desire to join the West Londoners. According to L’Equipe (via Sport Witness), the Senegal international is hoping to join Chelsea this season, which will be a very welcome piece of news for Lampard.
However, it seems as though the ball is very much in Rennes’ court over whether Mendy will leave France. The Blues may need to once again shift their attention to another goalkeeper who can replace Kepa.
