Thiago Silva is closing in on a move to Stamford Bridge this summer as Chelsea's first defensive signing.

The 35-year-old centre-back is reportedly headed to West London in what could be the final move of his career. According to French outlet Téléfoot Chaîne (via Sport Witness), Silva has agreed to join Frank Lampard's side and will become a Chelsea player this coming season.

Roman Abramovich has already fished into his pockets for funds to secure Hakim Ziyech and Timo Werner this window. Bundesliga star Kai Havertz is also set to join the club, with talks now in their final stage and a transfer fee close to being agreed.

Lampard will boast a very impressive attacking roster this season, but must ensure his top-heavy squad is balanced out with some high-calibre defenders.

The Stamford Bridge icon has stressed the importance of bolstering his defence, with a new goalkeeper his main priority. However, starting with Silva – especially on a free transfer – is very good business for the club.

According to wageindicator.co.uk, the Brazilian was earning more than £330,000 per week in wages at PSG, which will be easily met if the Blues can offload some deadweight players.

It seems Lampard is hoping for a complete defensive makeover this summer, having been underwhelmed with his backline so far. The likes of Emerson Palmieri and even senior defender Marcos Alonso could be headed out the door in order to make room for new recruits (via The Times).

Chelsea also look set to offload Antonio Rudiger after interest has been shown from Liverpool. No advanced talks are underway for the German, but adding an experienced player like Silva to the club could push Rudiger out the door.

Lampard chopped and changed his centre-back partnerships throughout last season and it seems the 27-year-old has fallen short of the mark.
