# Chelsea: Frank Lampard ‘keen’ to sign Leicester City star Ben Chilwell

**According to a report from [the Guardian](https://www.theguardian.com/football/2020/aug/20/chelsea-move-closer-to-signing-kai-havertz-from-bayer-leverkusen), Chelsea are still ‘[keen](https://www.theguardian.com/football/2020/aug/20/chelsea-move-closer-to-signing-kai-havertz-from-bayer-leverkusen)‘ on completing a deal to sign Leicester City star Ben Chilwell following the continued transfer saga surrounding Kai Havertz – but the club may need to offload and employ a sell-to-buy philosophy.**

Sporting director Marina Granovskaia has already been making waves so far this window, completing two deals for Timo Werner and Hakim Ziyech, both of whom cost a combined [£80 million.](https://www.express.co.uk/sport/football/1322713/Chelsea-transfer-news-Roman-Abramovich-300m-spending-spree)

Following a transfer-ban, it appears Chelsea haven’t been afraid to splash the cash, but an incoming deal for Havertz which could cost [£77.2 million](https://www.teamtalk.com/news/euro-transfer-gossip-triple-e119m-chelsea-raid-havertz-reguilon-leeds-leao) may force the club to sell stars and reduce debt margin.

Jorginho and Emerson Palmieri are the two [most likely candidates to leave west London](https://www.theguardian.com/football/2020/aug/20/chelsea-move-closer-to-signing-kai-havertz-from-bayer-leverkusen) following links to Serie A, and manager Frank Lampard could use a portion of those funds to assist a swoop for Chilwell.

Chelsea have been linked with the England defender for some time,[along with Man City](https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11712/12008842/chelsea-man-city-target-ben-chilwell-worth-more-than-50m-and-leicester-confident-he-will-stay), but the Guardian claim interest remains firm and the Blues are still ‘keen’ on acquiring the left-back.

Given the fact Lampard’s side conceded more goals than any other side in the[top 10 last season](https://www.whatsthescore.com/football/england/premier-league/standings.html), clearly a defensive reshuffle would be beneficial, with Chilwell seeming like a prime target at full-back.

Compared to current defender [Marcos Alonso](https://www.whoscored.com/Teams/15/Show/England-Chelsea), the 23-year-old averaged a superior number of tackles per 90 last campaign, all while making more clearances according to [WhoScored.](https://www.whoscored.com/Players/299272/Show/Ben-Chilwell)

Sky Sports pundit Tony Cottee praised Chilwell’s ‘[fantastic](https://www.lcfc.com/tv/1110523/cottee-excited-by-leicesters-english-prospects)‘ 2018/2019 season while Jonny Evans waxed lyrical over his teammate who ‘[has everything](https://www.leicestermercury.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/leicester-city-ben-chilwell-praise-3476877)‘ to Darren Fletcher.

To say the [£36m-valued man](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/ben-chilwell/profil/spieler/316125) has potential would be an understatement, but it remains to be seen when or if he will sign on the dotted line.
