# Chelsea: Frank Lampard should sign Sergio Romero over Edouard Mendy \[Opinion\]

**Chelsea are still on the market for a new goalkeeper after already spending [about £200million](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/fc-chelsea/transfers/verein/631) on new signings.**

A replacement for Kepa Arrizabalaga is a priority on Frank Lampard’s shopping list this window. The Spaniard fell short of the mark last season and in order to challenge for silverware, the Blues feel their defence is an area in need of improvement.

According to The Express (via [Sportsmole](https://amp.sportsmole.co.uk/football/man-utd/transfer-talk/news/man-utd-willing-to-listen-to-offers-for-chelsea-linked-romero_413664.html)), Manchester United’s Sergio Romero is one man on the club’s radar.

After [offering Dean Henderson new terms,](https://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/man-utd-dean-henderson-contract-18834097) United are willing to listen to offers for fringe goalkeeper Romero. The Argentinian will likely slip down the pecking order now the Englishman has returned from a loan spell with Sheffield United.

Romero made 17 appearances last term, but didn’t make it off the bench once to play in the Premier League (via [Transfermarkt](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/sergio-romero/leistungsdaten/spieler/30690/plus/0?saison=2019)). As a result, he could be looking for a new chapter in his career.

The 33-year-old has helped the Reds win the FA Cup, Super Cup and Europa League as well as being an Olympic goal medalist for his country.

Although the Blues could be inching closer to a move for Rennes’ Edouard Mendy, a recent report suggested he could [cost as much as £50million.](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/chelsea-fc-transfer-rumours/chelsea-could-splash-50m-on-new-goalkeeper-edouard-mendy/) This being said, a cheaper option may be Lampard’s preference.

Additionally, Romero already has Premier League experience and has trained alongside David de Gea. With an impressive 96 caps for Argentina plus a small [Transfermarkt value](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/sergio-romero/marktwertverlauf/spieler/30690) of £2.5million, Chelsea could strike a very good deal for a goalkeeper who may fit the team a lot better.

Added to that, if it didn’t work out they could always revisit the goalkeeping situation next summer and they would not have lost out on a fortune with Romero – Mendy could be a much bigger risk.
