# Newcastle United: Ryan Fraser picks up ‘calf problem’

**[Newcastle United](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/newcastle-united-news/) reporter for The Shields Gazette Miles Starforth has shared that Ryan Fraser has picked up a ‘calf problem’ ahead of this weekend.**

### The Lowdown: Not in squad

Fraser was [not in the squad](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/ryan-fraser/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/146795/plus/0?saison=2022&verein=762&liga=&wettbewerb=&pos=&trainer_id=) as the St. James’ Park outfit beat Crystal Palace on penalties after a 0-0 draw in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday night, after being [on the bench](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/ryan-fraser/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/146795/plus/0?saison=2022&verein=762&liga=&wettbewerb=&pos=&trainer_id=) in the 4-1 win away at Southampton.

He has made [eight](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/ryan-fraser/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/146795/plus/0?saison=2022&verein=762&liga=&wettbewerb=&pos=&trainer_id=) appearances in total so far this season, but has not started in the Premier League since [September](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/ryan-fraser/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/146795/plus/0?saison=2022&verein=762&liga=&wettbewerb=&pos=&trainer_id=).

### The Latest: Calf problem

Taking to Twitter on Wednesday night, [Starforth](https://twitter.com/milesstarforth/status/1590479662236717057) shared that Fraser missed the game against Palace because he has picked up a ‘calf problem’:

### The Verdict: Not ideal

Although Fraser has not had much game time this season, losing him to a calf problem is not ideal for Eddie Howe going into the weekend’s clash at home to Chelsea.

They do not have many [natural wide options](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/newcastle-united/startseite/verein/762) in the senior squad, and Allan Saint-Maximin has only just returned from [injury](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/allan-saint-maximin/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/272642/plus/0?saison=2022&verein=762&liga=&wettbewerb=&pos=&trainer_id=).

Interestingly, he has been [called up](https://twitter.com/ScotlandNT/status/1590307504550207501) for Scotland for their upcoming friendly against Turkey, which suggests that his latest setback is not too serious, but nonetheless Fraser is now a doubt for the Magpies against Chelsea, as they look to gain three points on one of their rivals for a top four place in the Premier League.
