# Chelsea: Thiago Silva willing to ‘accept’ new contract

**[Chelsea](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/chelsea-fc-news/) defender [Thiago Silva](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/tag/thiago-silva/) is willing to ‘accept’ a new contract to extend his stay at Stamford Bridge, according to journalist [Simon Phillips](https://twitter.com/siphillipssport).**

### The Lowdown: Fresh terms being prepared

The Brazilian first arrived in the [Premier League](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/premier-league-news/) when he put pen to paper on an initial [one-year](https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11668/12055492/thiago-silva-chelsea-sign-former-paris-saint-germain-defender-on-one-year-deal) deal back in 2020, but with his contract set to [expire](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/fc-chelsea/vertragsende/verein/631) at the end of the season, his future is up in the air.

[The Guardian](https://www.theguardian.com/football/2023/jan/24/thiago-silva-chelsea-sign-new-deal-past-39th-birthday#:~:text=The%20Brazilian%20defender%20is%20out,Stamford%20Bridge%20in%20September%202020.) have reported that Graham Potter’s side are planning to offer the 38-year-old veteran fresh terms in a bid to fend off interest ahead of the summer, amid recent [links](https://www.lance.com.br/fluminense/mario-bittencourt-diz-se-fluminense-voltara-ao-mercado-e-comenta-chances-de-contratar-thiago-silva-e-marcelo.html) to his former club Fluminense.

However, other outlets have since [suggested](https://sportwitness.co.uk/player-made-clear-hes-happy-chelsea-no-surprise-new-contract-way/) that the centre-back has made it clear to the Blues that he is happy with his position at the club, offering hope that he will sign on the dotted line.

### The Latest: Silva set to sign new deal?

Speaking to [GiveMeSport](https://www.givemesport.com/88109107-chelsea-110k-a-week-star-now-willing-to-accept-deal-at-stamford-bridge), Phillips backed up reports regarding Silva’s stance at Chelsea and insisted that it was likely only a matter of a time before a development occurs.

*“I’ve been hearing positive things on this one the last couple of days and I share the same information as what’s gone out there.*

*“Chelsea decided recently that they will be offering him this new contract and Thiago Silva is willing to listen to the terms and pretty much accept the contract.”*

### The Verdict: Boost for Potter

Silva has been [hailed](https://twitter.com/buntingfootball/status/1496275335482163205?s=46&t=EdPiWgCKShtYJ-Ym1J2hjg) a ‘class act’ by journalist [Josh Bunting](https://twitter.com/Buntingfootball) and it would be a huge boost for Chelsea and Potter should he agree to extending his stay.

The [Nike-sponsored](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/thiago-silva/profil/spieler/29241) star currently averages 4.4 clearances and 2.1 aerial wins per top-flight game, alongside recording an impressive 90.4% pass success rate, highlighting the rock he is at the heart of the backline ([WhoScored](https://www.whoscored.com/Players/28550/Show/Thiago-Silva)).

The Rio de Janeiro native also provides a threat in the final third, having scored [five](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/thiago-silva/leistungsdatenverein/spieler/29241) goals and provided the same number of assists during his time at the club so far, making him a massively important player to keep in the building.
