# Chelsea: Thiago Silva could sign on free transfer as Frank Lampard strengthens defence

**According to an exclusive report from [The Telegraph](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/football/2020/08/19/psg-defender-thiago-silva-offered-chelsea-free-transfer/), Chelsea are considering a move to sign Paris-Saint Germain defender Thiago Silva on a free transfer, with manager Frank Lampard looking to strengthen his back line ahead of next season.**

Chelsea shipped the most goals of [any team in last season’s Premier League top 10](https://www.premierleague.com/tables?co=1&se=274&ha=-1), with rotating options Antonio Rudiger, Fikayo Tomori, Kurt Zouma and Andreas Christensen seemingly not doing enough to stay resolute at the back.

As a result, sporting director Marina Granovskaia has been touted to make significant defensive additions, including Leicester City defender Ben Chilwell, who has been heavily linked with a move to Stamford Bridge ([Sky Sports](https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11095/12050822/kai-havertz-chelsea-and-bayer-leverkusen-apart-on-valuation-ben-chilwell-deal-close-the-insider)).

Now, as per [The Telegraph](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/football/2020/08/19/psg-defender-thiago-silva-offered-chelsea-free-transfer/), Chelsea are also considering the chance to sign Silva, who is out of contract following the conclusion of PSG’s Champions League campaign, with the Ligue 1 giants up against Bayern Munich in the final of that competition on Sunday.

According to [WhoScored,](https://www.whoscored.com/Players/28550/Show/Thiago-Silva) despite reaching the twilight stages of his career, Silva has still averaged an impeccable [95% passing accuracy](https://www.whoscored.com/Players/28550/Show/Thiago-Silva) out from the back, displaying a mature head as PSG aim to control possession in the majority of their games.

As well as this, the Brazilian star is a seasoned international, having amassed [88 caps for his country](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/thiago-silva/profil/spieler/29241) overall.

With Silva lauded as ‘extraordinary’ by ex-Lyon striker Frederic Piquionne, who also drew attention to his leadership skills, Chelsea may have a bargain on their hands regardless of his age ([RMC Sport via Canal Supporters](https://psgtalk.com/2020/07/piquionne-praises-silvas-experience-and-leadership-over-his-psg-career/)).

The Brazilian would be a quick fix in an otherwise leaky defence, but it couldn’t hurt to have someone as experienced as him in Lampard’s dressing room either.
