# Newcastle United: Dean Jones drops exciting Edson Alvarez claim

**[Transfer insider Dean Jones](https://twitter.com/DeanJonesSoccer) has dropped an exciting [Newcastle United](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/newcastle-united-news/) claim on reported January target Edson Alvarez.**

### The Lowdown: Alvarez ‘tracked’

It was [reported](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/newcastle-united-news/ajax-transfer-news-alvarez-leicester-tielemans/) last week that Ajax central midfielder Alvarez is being ‘tracked’ by the St. James’ Park outfit ahead of a potential move in the January transfer window.

Eddie Howe is [looking](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/newcastle-united-news/newcastle-transfer-news-latest-rumours-midfield-howe/) to add another midfielder to his squad, and Alvarez could become available in the next window, although they may face competition from fellow [Premier League](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/premier-league-news/) rivals Chelsea for his signature.

### The Latest: One to watch

Speaking to [GiveMeSport](https://www.givemesport.com/88064533-newcastle-43m-leader-now-what-howe-wants-at-st-james-park), Jones has claimed that Alvarez is certainly ‘one to look out for’ for the North East club come January, adding that he is a ‘good fit’ for them:

*“They do continue to look for somebody that’d be a good fit for this team, and I think Edson Alvarez could be a good one. His football IQ would probably fit with what Eddie Howe wants. It’s probably one to look out for.”*

### The Verdict: Get it done

With the likes of Bruno Guimaraes and Jonjo Shelvey having [injury problems](https://www.premierinjuries.com/teams/newcastle-united) this season, the Tynesiders could do with an extra man in the middle of the park.

Hailed as a ‘[monster](https://twitter.com/FelipeCar/status/1422052362391326725)‘ by The Athletic’s Felipe Cardenas, Alvarez has one goal and two assists in nine matches for Ajax so far this term ([Transfermarkt](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/edson-alvarez/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/401356/plus/0?saison=2022&verein=&liga=&wettbewerb=&pos=&trainer_id=)) and has been very impressive in general, notably putting in an ‘[exceptional performance](https://twitter.com/StatmanDave/status/1567581684727484418)‘ in their 4-0 thumping of Glasgow Rangers in the UEFA Champions League group stages.

The 24-year-old also boasts no fewer than [59](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/edson-alvarez/nationalmannschaft/spieler/401356) caps for the Mexico national team, and is sure to attract some attention during the FIFA World Cup in Qatar, so it could prove to be a shrewd signing, should a move materialise.
