# Everton: Kevin Thelwell in ‘advanced talks’ to sign Ross Barkley

**[Everton](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/everton-fc-news/) journalist Chris Smith has revealed that Director of Football Kevin Thelwell is now in ‘advanced talks’ to sign Ross Barkley.**

### The Lowdown: Midfielder wanted

Given recent links to the likes of [Guido Rodriguez](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/everton-fc-news/real-betis-transfer-news-rodriguez-premier-league/) and [Idrissa Gueye](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/everton-fc-news/psg-transfer-news-gueye-romano-premier-league/), it is clear that Frank Lampard would like to bring in a new central midfielder before the transfer window closes – the middle of the park looked a little bare despite the impressive win on Friday evening.

Barkley was [left out](https://www.chelseafc.com/en/news/article/chelsea-squad-for-udinese-game?utm_source=tw&utm_medium=orgsoc&utm_campaign=none) of Chelsea’s recent 28-man pre-season squad, and so he seems surplus to requirements at Stamford Bridge.

### The Latest: Barkley talks

Taking to Twitter, [Smith](https://twitter.com/CJSmith91/status/1552993096283176961) has revealed that the Goodison Park outfit are now in ‘advanced talks’ to sign Barkley.

Expanding in his piece for [90min](https://www.90min.com/posts/everton-transfer-notebook-barkley-gueye-talks-batshuayi-broadhead-loan), the journalist adds that he is ‘keen’ to return to Merseyside, and only ‘small details’ need to be agreed before he potentially makes the move.

### The Verdict: Get it done

Of course, some supporters would feel conflicted by Barkley’s potential return, given that his original move to Chelsea from the Toffees was in [bad taste](https://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/everton-failed-replace-another-man-18148612).

However, they must not forget the impact that he had as a youngster, when he was even dubbed the ‘[next Wayne Rooney](https://www.express.co.uk/sport/football/1489648/Chelsea-Ross-Barkley-what-happened-latest-update-news-SNT)‘, high praise indeed given what the former Blue went on to [achieve](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/wayne-rooney/erfolge/spieler/3332) in the game with Manchester United.

Lampard has [sung his praises](https://www.goal.com/en/news/lampard-first-class-barkley-dedicated-to-chelsea-cause/16mm4uppw1iaj13fn791r5d8g8) before after managing him in West London, and so this could be a match made in heaven.
